The Parts of a Digital Camera Explained

A digital camera consists of a mixture of diverse components. Each and every part of the camera has a special specific function to perform. The different parts of the camera are:

  • Lenses
  • Flashes
  • Sensors
  • Self-timers
  • Hot Shoe
  • LCD monitor
  • LCD Night display
  • Diopter lenses.

Lenses
There are several types of digital camera lenses.

  1. Fixed focal length lens: With this type the camera lens does not change at all. To get a close-up of an object you would have to go closer to the object.
  2. Optical zoom lens: An optical zoom is a true zoom. Its focal length changes. An optical zoom produces the best quality images.
  3. Digital zoom lens: A digital zoom is not a true zoom. It is a simulated zoom that enlarges the central portion of an image in the camera.
  4. Interchangeable lens: This type of lens is used on SLR digital cameras.

Flashes
Flash for digital cameras are of two types

  1. External flash units provide increased flash range, more control of light direction, faster recycle times and virtually eliminate red eye spots.
  2. In-built Flash units are within the camera and are not as powerful as external units.

Sensors
Digital cameras record images in an electronic form. The sensor is the heart of a digital camera, records an image when you take a picture. Light strikes on the sensor through the lens.

Self Timers
The main reason for using a digital camera's self-timer is so that the photographer can be in the photo. It also prevents images from getting blurred due to camera movement while clicking manually.

Hot Shoe
A hot shoe is an accessory located on top of the camera that allows an external flash to to be connected to a camera.

LCD Monitor
The screen on the back or at the side of a digital camera is the Liquid Crystal Display monitor. It is used to frame shots and view photos.

LCD Night Display
Some cameras have LCD screens that offer night display. These screens automatically boost up when taking photos in dark surroundings.

Diopter Lens
These are available on some digital cameras. They are pretty handy for people who wear glasses. Diopter lens are adjustable and lets you focus till the viewfinder matches your eyesight. Stop adjusting once you find the image is the sharpest.
